SOCPSY 3Y03 Students Participate in Experiential Learning Networking Event

On Wednesday, October 2nd, SOCPSY 3Y03 Applied Social Psychology students participated in an exciting experiential learning networking event. Organized by course instructor Dr. Erica Speakman, in conjunction with the Student Success Centre, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Alumni Services, the event brought together community organizations and alumni, including Accessibility Hamilton Alliance, Girl Guides Canada, Routes Youth Centre, and Distress Centre Halton. The final group assignment for SOCPSY 3Y03 requires students to select a social or practical problem and devise a solution using their knowledge of social psychology. Instead of choosing hypothetical problems, the participating community members provided real-world examples and considerations, affording students valuable insights for their final course assignments.

Student Megan Lamb attended the event and said it was a great way to meet community partners and learn about the issues they encounter.

“The networking event was an incredible opportunity to connect with local community members in a meaningful way,” said Lamb. “It was touching to hear first-hand about their programs and the difficulties they face. Additionally, the event helped me develop essential skills that will be beneficial in future academic and personal endeavours, such as active listening and interpersonal communication. I would definitely recommend continuing this event for future cohorts of Social Psychology students!”

Teaching Assistant Lyla Faroogh, who also participated in the course last year, said, “As a student, I was so focused on my studies that I underestimated the value of career-building experiences. Attending the networking event became a turning point for me, as it introduced me to the practical side of Social Psychology. Connecting with community members made me feel empowered and gave me the opportunity to apply new skills.

“Now, as a teaching assistant for SOCPSY 3Y03, I see just how valuable these moments are for students to build confidence and develop networking skills. I reconnected with Lauren from Distress Centre Halton, I was thrilled to learn about the new student volunteers and the significant impact of last year’s projects. Within just a year, I’ve witnessed the positive growth of this event and look forward to seeing how the Social Psychology program continues to evolve.”

Congratulations to Dr. Speakman, her students, and all the participating organizations for a successful and enriching event!
