Social Psychology Student Spotlight: Anastasia Bowyer

Anastasia Bowyer is in their fourth year of the Honours Social Psychology program. Here’s what Anastasia had to say about choosing a degree in Social Psychology.

What led you to choose the Honours Social Psychology program at McMaster? What is your ideal future path with this degree?

I chose Social Psychology because it is a perfect balance between the theory of sociology and the science of psychology! I have always been interested in understanding how social structures shape individual behaviour, and this program allows me to explore that intersection in a rigorous and evidence-based way. My ideal job with my degree would be to become a behavioural analyst for CSIS, where I could apply psychological insight to issues related to national security and public safety.

What is one aspect about the Honours Social Psychology program that you love?

My favourite things about the Honours Social Psychology program would be the professors. They are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, and they teach complex and engaging material in ways that genuinely make you want to learn more. A special shoutout to Dr. Speakman and Dr. Clancy, who have really shaped my undergrad experience.

As part of the Honours Social Psychology program, students complete a capstone group research project. Can you give a brief description of your capstone research project?

My group and I are conducting a research project titled “Sexual Belief Effects on Domestic Violence Myths Across Sexual Orientations.” Our study examines whether individuals hold subconscious beliefs, attitudes, or biases about domestic violence, and how these may differ across sexual orientations. We are particularly interested in understanding how underlying sexual beliefs may shape the endorsement of domestic violence myths and influence perceptions of victims and perpetrators.

What would you like to say to prospective students thinking of an Honours BA in Social Psychology?

I highly recommend this program not only because it sets you up for success, but because what you learn is genuinely fascinating and applicable to everyday life. Social Science students are the ones who go on to make meaningful differences in the world, whether through research, policy, advocacy, or leadership. This program gives you the critical thinking skills and social awareness needed to understand complex issues and create real change. It truly is a gateway to making an impact.
